Can we make kitchens out of waste?
Each year, approximately 100 billion PET bottles are consumed worldwide. We need to be better at using the earth’s resources wisely and we must start seeing billions of discarded PET bottles as the resource which they actually are. This is the standpoint of Anna Granath and her colleagues, who develop new kitchens for IKEA. Together in close cooperation with suppliers and designers, they developed the KUNGSBACKA kitchen front which consists of a particleboard made from recycled wood wrapped in plastic film made from recycled PET bottles.
More sustainable and sleek storage for a clean look
For each door, plastic from 25 half-litre bottles is used. It might not sound like much, but it’s a crucial step towards an end to the use of virgin, oil-based plastic. By recycling and converting the bottles into plastic film for kitchen fronts, the plastic is reused for at least 25 years. Much longer than the time it takes to finish a bottle of water!
