Accidents related to furniture tipping over is a serious home safety issue for the entire home furnishing industry. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there is a fatal accident every two weeks due to tip-over of TVs, appliances and furniture in the U.S.

Following a tragic tip-over accident of a MALM chest of drawers in the US, IKEA US initiated a dialogue with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). A local recall in North America is one outcome of a dialogue between IKEA in North America and the local consumer authorities. The recall is based on the local ASTM standard, which is applicable in North America. IKEA chests of drawers meet all mandatory stability requirements in the EU and other parts of the world.

The best way to prevent tip-over accidents is to secure furniture to the wall. To create safe homes, we always provide tip-over restraints with furniture that needs to be secured and wall attachment is an integral part of the assembly instructions.

IKEA is committed to take the lead in addressing this challenge. The Secure It! campaign is developed to create awareness of the risk of furniture tip-overs and how to prevent it from happening.

With the Secure it! campaign, launched globally in stores and on IKEA’s website, IKEA urges customers to inspect their chests of drawers and dressers and to ensure that they are securely anchored to the wall according to assembly instructions.
