Climate change is a reality. And electricity generated by fossil fuels is to a large extent the cause of it. It's also true that we need electricity to live a good life at home, and that most power is produced in power plants using polluting fuels. Clean alternatives are available, but up to now they have been expensive, complicated and exclusive to large-scale projects.
Wouldn't it be great if IKEA could play a leading role in making solar energy accessible to the many people?
To help tackle climate change, we have decided to make our operations energy independent, producing as much renewable energy as we consume by 2020.
Solar power is a renewable and clean energy source. So far we have over 750,000 solar panels on our stores and other buildings. But what we do is one thing. We also want to encourage our customers to contribute by providing products and solutions that enable them to live more sustainably.
One example of that is our IKEA Home Solar Business.
We want to make clean energy available to many people. To have a real impact we know we need to make our offer affordable, and combine it with an attractive financial offer. Our home solar solution is designed to do just that. It includes solar panels to be fitted on the roof, and an easy control system that monitors production. It's a cost-efficient solution that allows as many people as possible to generate their own power, reduce carbon emission – and save money at the same time.
If you’ve never heard of Home Solar, it’s because it’s a new business for IKEA and we have only launched it on five markets. We really want to make home solar widely available as soon as possible, and luckily it shouldn't be too long now. When it comes to fighting global warming, we've got no time to lose.
