Eating your way to a lower climate footprint

What we eat has a huge impact on the environment, from food production to processing and disposal. Being more conscious about our food choices can reduce the impact on the climate and contribute to a more sustainable everyday life. Does this mean you have to compromise on taste? No – we believe you can have both.

Our plant ball has the look, taste and juicy bite of its meaty counterpart, but only 4% of the climate footprint.

Food should be good for you—and for the planet. By increasing the proportion of our plant-based food – such as the plant ball – we are getting closer to our goal of becoming climate positive by 2030. Meat lover or vegan, making sustainable choices benefits us all, and we plan to make the world a greener place, one plant ball at a time.

To protect future seafood supplies, all IKEA seafood is sourced with care not to disturb sensitive marine ecosystems.

Today in our restaurants and Swedish Food Markets around the world, the vast majority of the seafood products sold and served are environmentally certified. For example, ASC-certified (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) salmon and MSC- certified (Marine Stewardship Council) cod, herring and shrimp.

Thanks to these two key certification systems, we are able to offer responsibly-produced seafood to over 680 million IKEA Food customers in 52 countries.

Besides preserving biodiversity, organic farming helps to maintain soil health too.

We want to source food from more sustainable sources and make it available at affordable prices. Alongside agriculture that minimizes the use of chemical inputs, organic food production is one of the ways we can achieve this goal.

The definitions of organic vary across countries, but the intention is the same – good environmental practices, like preserving soil health, biodiversity, and human and animal health. In the IKEA store, you will find several organic food options.
