Work flexibly: set up a hallway desk

In Sara’s busy home all the bedrooms are spoken for, so she created a family office space in the hallway. ‘It’s open for anyone to use, doesn’t take up valuable sleeping space and means you’re still part of the family action while you’re working,’ she says.

Add an eclectic display
Family keepsakes, artwork and messages add soul to a simple workspace – making it easy for everyone to contribute. ‘As this space is also used as a hallway, people use the wire storage to keep their favourite accessories to hand,’ says Sara.

Set a creative mood
Use light, colour, texture and scent to stimulate your flow of thoughts and help pull a multi-use space together. ‘Small rituals like lighting a candle or tending to a plant are nice ways to mark the beginning of ‘work’ time,’ says Sara.

Frame your inspiration
A moodboard can help you keep your ideas, deadlines or to-do list in focus. ‘Instead of a pinboard I like to use the plain wall,’ says Sara. ‘I took a vintage frame from my grandmother, removed the glass and backing board, and painted the frame black to match the rest of the colour scheme.’

By introducing a desk, some practical organisation and a few cosy details, we were able to turn an unused part of the hallway into a creative workspace the whole family can use
