Welcome to the world’s most sustainable IKEA store
Since its opening in February, IKEA Greenwich in London has received an ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM certification – the highest award for sustainable construction. “The store takes sustainability to the next level, not just in its design and architecture, but also as it was built with the local community in mind,” says Helen Aylett, IKEA Greenwich store manager.
An immersive, in-store experience
In a world of digital shopping, IKEA Greenwich is a refreshing reason to go in store. “We want to inspire and enable Londoners to live a more sustainable life at home, through workshops and activities,’ says Helen. Frequent product demonstrations and engaging displays invite visitors to immerse themselves in IKEA products, while learning from expert know-how.
Designed to boost wellbeing
“The store has been created with the local community in mind and provides a number of flexible spaces and facilities – which can be used for free – including a roof pavilion and garden,” says Helen. Customer and co-worker wellness is prioritised, with plentiful plants throughout and yoga and meditation classes for all to enjoy.
An inviting, eco-friendly destination
The space is a hub for meeting, sharing, learning and shopping. Communal spaces are flexible for work, leisure and group activities. And wherever possible, furnishings are made from natural, renewable and recycled materials, while natural light streams in through the large windows.
Introducing innovative learning labs
The store’s Learning Lab offers bookable workshops and activities on how to reduce waste, re-use materials and upcycle. Want to find out how to rescue old furniture or transform old products and textiles into new creations? From upcycling cushions to sewing classes and furniture repair, they’ve got it covered.
Committed to community outreach
Being a positive force for change in the local community is at the heart of IKEA Greenwich’s ethos. Projects have included supporting a nearby ecology park, hosting free community cooking classes in the Live Kitchen and working with local schools to share expertise on growing, food and energy-saving. “We want to put the needs of our community first,” says Helen.
A leading example of sustainable architecture
With a BREEAM rating of 90.44%, the building has sustainability built into its DNA, including super-efficient and renewable energy from solar panels, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting and renewable construction materials. There’s also a geothermal system for heating and cooling, while the gardens support local wildlife.
A store worth celebrating
IKEA Greenwich is now officially the most sustainable retail space in the UK. “This is a huge step in our commitment to have a positive impact on the environment, the local community and our customers,” says Helen.
