Pastels and a colourful pop. Lighten things up by building a base of soft pastels (pinks, blues, greys) and clean whites with throws, vases, baskets—even plant pots. Choose an eye-catching, bright piece to work as a contrast. Artwork can be a big help to unite the colour palette and style.

Patterns and a monochrome mood. Go bold and start with graphic patterns you love—hello, modern checks. Stick to two or three for a calm feel. Match the pattern colours on textiles, small decor, lighting, etc. With crisp black and white, use accents like rich blues to relax the room.
