Here’s what you need

An open backed chair
A couple of different types of yarn and fabric
A flat piece of wood or cardboard with a hole in one end
Scissors
A ball of string
Tape
And a little bit of patience

Pull your chair to an easy working space and start off by making a framework for your weaving. To do this cut a length of string long enough to loop over the back of the chair and reach the ground on both sides. Then just repeat across the chair and tape in place at the top.

Then fix in place the hanging strings at the bottom. If you don’t have a bar across the back of your chair, just make a temporary one. We’ve used a piece of wood.

Now it’s time to start weaving! Tie a length of yarn to your “shuttle” (the flat piece of wood/cardboard with a hole in it) and start to weave your way over one string and under the next across the framework. Once you’ve completed a row, gently push your line in place and then go in the opposite order on the next row.

Once you’ve started your weaving you can use different materials and colours using the same technique. Just do a simple knot to connect two pieces of yarn, or if the material is different like this wooly one here, just leave it loose and when you start weaving with yarn again it’ll hold it in place.

Then, when you’re happy with the length, cut the strings at the bottom and knot them under your weaving to lock it in place.

And you’re done! You can use the same basic technique for any weaving project. It’s the perfect activity to get creative with materials, colours and sizes. Good luck!
