Make it yourself: sew a cushion cover
Watch this video for step-by-step instructions on how to make a cushion cover. Textiles are an easy and affordable way to change how a room looks and feels. We met Julia, who likes sewing
cushion covers at home to give her living room a new look
There are a few different ways to make cushions, but the basic envelope is the simplest one to start with – no need to add zips or button fastenings. Here’s how Julia does it:
1. Using pinking shears, cut three pieces of fabric as follows: 70x45cm (front piece); 50x45cm (envelope back, piece one); and 32x45cm (envelope back, piece two).
2. Take the bigger of the back pieces and place it patterned side down. To create a hem, fold one of the 45cm edges over by 2.5cm then iron the folded edge flat before sewing it using a straight stitch. Repeat with the 45cm edge of the small back piece.
3. Now take the front piece and lay it patterned side up on a table. Place the back pieces on top with patterned sides down – allow them to overlap slightly. Sew around all four edges, leaving a 2.5cm seam allowance.
4. Turn the cushion cover right side out and you’re ready to fill it with a cushion pad.
We love to see our customers get creative with our products. Go for it! But please note that altering or modifying IKEA products so they can no longer be re-sold or used for their original purpose, means the IKEA commercial guarantees and your right to return the products will be lost.
