Home visit: time to think in colour

Find creative ways to introduce colour into your home. With everything from clashing brights to an all-white palette, here’s inspiration from homes we’ve visited around the world…

Think ‘more is more’ If you’ve got a passion for a particular colour, don’t be afraid to show it! Instead of adding a few small accents, follow Cecilia’s example of choosing red for the walls, seating, tablecloth and artwork.

Minimal colour for maximum impact Build up layers of neutral tones – it’s an easy way to make an impact with a limited colour scheme. White on white also helps to create a sense of space in a small room.

Mark out zones with a feature wall In an open-plan living space, colour can help create distinct zones. The yellow feature wall helps to make this kitchen feel like a room in itself.

Set the mood with colour Inside this studio, artist Graça wanted to capture a playful energy, while also bringing order to her art materials. She chose pink storage to add fun and organisation to her workspace.

Create an optical illusion Use black to add depth to a space. Black plays clever tricks on the eye and erases corners – making open storage and alcoves, like the ones in Rebecca’s walk-in wardrobe, feel endless.

Bring opposites together Choose two colours that are opposites on the colour wheel, such as orange and blue, to create a complementary colour scheme. Try repainting an old wooden cabinet and placing it against an already colourful wall to make it stand out.

Add colour without paint When repainting the walls isn’t an option, find new ways to add colour. Thinking of green? Start with one piece of upholstered furniture and add indoor plants around it to boost different shades of the colour, like in Jules’ apartment in Berlin.

We love to see our customers get creative with our products. Go for it! But please note that altering or modifying IKEA products so they can no longer be re-sold or used for their original purpose, means the IKEA commercial guarantees and your right to return the products will be lost.
