Home visit: set a floral table for summer

Try this simple yet beautiful table setting, styled with seasonal colours and flowers. Because summer isn’t a time to wait for an excuse… Make every day a special occasion!

Build up your theme

Choose a theme and maximise it! Start by laying a neutral base – a white, cotton tablecloth feels light and summery, and helps bring the brightly-coloured crockery and decorations into focus. If one big floral centrepiece isn’t your style, use lots of mini vases dotted along the length of the table. Use just a few sprigs in each vase to keep the overall impression clean and simple.

Mix and match crockery

Give your table character with a mix of your favourite crockery and flea market finds. “I don’t have many bowls or plates in sets. For me, it doesn’t matter if things don’t match perfectly – most people won’t even notice!” says Julia. “What I like most is when a table feels really full, because it’s more fun that way. Lots of plates, small bowls and dishes, glasses and cups.”

Add personality to place settings

Finish each place setting with a thoughtful touch. How about adding your guests’ favourite flower alongside their dinner plate? Instead of buying a whole bouquet of fresh flowers, Julia uses single stem artificial flowers that she can easily reuse for other creative ideas. “I like to introduce subtle personal touches, something unique to each guest,” says Julia.

If I’ve made an effort to cook up something good, it seems natural to pay attention to decorating the table.

From dining table to sofa

Your meal has gone down a treat, but nobody wants to go home just yet! Keep the party going by taking your guests from dinner table to sofa. Julia uses the tray top from her side table to carry drinks to the living room, where they’ll all spend the rest of their evening. A tray also saves on making trips backwards and forwards, so she can focus on enjoying time with her visitors.

We love to see our customers get creative with our products. Go for it! But please note that altering or modifying IKEA products so they can no longer be re-sold or used for their original purpose, means the IKEA commercial guarantees and your right to return the products will be lost.
