Home visit: design an organised open wardrobe

Use open storage to put the clothes you love on show. With a custom-designed wall unit, it’s easy to see what you have and find outfit inspiration.

Storage to suit you

To design a made-to-measure wardrobe, start by categorising your clothes and accessories by type and season so you can decide which storage solution suits each group – rail, shelf or drawer. When Amélie designed this customised ELVARLI storage unit, she made it work for her things and took advantage of her room’s full height.

Get more from your shelves

Maximise shelf space with a mix of smaller storage and displays. Amélie uses the lower shelves for folded clothes, but saves the shelves at eye level for things she enjoys seeing – pictures, plants and boxes of accessories.

Open up with a mirror

As well as being a dressing area essential, a mirror is a great way to make your space feel bigger as it reflects light around a room. ‘Adding a full-length mirror makes my wardrobe feel more like a proper dressing room,’ says Amélie. The KNAPPER has a built-in rail, perfect for storing once-worn clothes or tomorrow’s outfit.

Switch with the seasons

Keep this season’s clothes in the most accessible spot, and swap things around when the weather changes. ‘In winter, my knitwear is on the lower open shelves for easy access, while my light summer clothes are packed away in boxes on the top shelves.’

Find a space for everything

Once you’ve designed your storage unit, customise it with baskets and boxes. Amélie keeps jewellery and hair accessories in small wicker baskets, and stores oversized items such as blankets in bigger boxes. The shelf heights are adjustable, so it’s easy to adapt if she needs to make space for something new.

My storage, my way

‘Choosing a customisable system for my wardrobe gave me the freedom and flexibility to mix and match it to my exact needs and space,’ says Amélie. ‘I love interiors as much as I love fashion, and with my wardrobe I can combine the two.’
