Home visit: 5 super small space tricks to try
Living spaces may be shrinking, but there’s always room for creativity. Try these tips and tricks from a tiny apartment dweller and see how you could optimise the space you have.
Get creative with displays
An all-white scheme with closed storage will make a room feel bigger. But keeping everything behind closed doors isn’t the only way to go in a small home. Rhianna treats the all-white decor in her apartment as a blank canvas and uses open shelves to get creative, turning everyday objects into a beautiful display. “The shelves encourage me to think about what I put on show.”
Choose clip-on accessories
Rhianna’s books are stored below her mezzanine bed frame, and with the addition of a wall/clamp spotlight, she was able to create a late-night reading nook without sacrificing any space. Not only does the light make a big piece of furniture more useful, it can be used anywhere – from desk lamp to kitchen spotlight.
Reframe your view
If you love the idea of a gallery wall but don’t have the room for it, how about using one photo frame which can display as many memories as you like? This version has front-opening hinges so Rhianna can quickly and easily swap in a new picture (she’s a photographer, so there’s a lot of them!) every time she feels like a refresh.
Use the walls
If entertaining is what you do best, don’t let a small space hold you back. Extra seating can often be bulky and difficult to store, so Rhianna found a neat solution. She added hooks along the wall to hang lightweight folding chairs for guests. “Believe it or not, my apartment is often the meeting place before we head out to dinner in the city!” says Rhianna.
Turn function into fun
Flip the way you think about functional items and make them playful features instead! Rhianna found her star lamp in the children’s department – she loved the design but also loved the fact that it would save space by being wall-mounted. Textiles also take up a large portion of her sleep space, so Rhianna opted for light and bright patterned bedlinen.
We love to see our customers get creative with our products. Go for it! But please note that altering or modifying IKEA products so they can no longer be re-sold or used for their original purpose, means the IKEA commercial guarantees and your right to return the products will be lost.
