Home tour: fresh balcony updates for spring

Welcome the new season by renewing your balcony space. From growing an oasis to practical small-space solutions, find inspiration and style suggestions in our round-up of ideas from real homes we’ve visited. You’ll be feeling spring-ready in no time!

Grow an urban oasis

Create abundant surroundings by layering plants and natural elements of all shapes and sizes, both high and low. With a table and chair, a barbecue, plus lights for atmosphere, you can even savour the joys of cooking and eating in your own wild sanctuary.

Load up on crates

Use wooden crates to group together a collection of plants. Not only does it make a compact balcony look more vibrant, it makes the plants portable, so you can move them around to find the best spot for maximum sunshine! Leave the wood bare for an organic feel or customise the crates with a coat of paint.

Make the most of a small space

Even the tiniest of Juliet balconies can be full of big ideas. Why not try growing an urban orchard that yields both fresh herbs and fruit, or add two single stools so you can enjoy breakfast alfresco? You’ll be surprised how much you can pack in to a small space!

Revamp your floors

Add warmth to your balcony with natural-wood floor tiles. It will make your balcony feel like an extension of your home, so you can open up your doors and wander out barefoot with a coffee in hand every morning.

Create a multifunctional space

Make room for sitting, storing and growing! If you haven’t got a washing line, create a laundry area on your balcony instead.Squeeze a practical utility room in to one corner, with a slim clothes rail to hang your washing. That way, you’ll still have enough space for a relaxed seating area and plenty of potted plants.

Grow a living wall

Take your urban garden to new heights with vertical solutions – use basket hooks to hang plants and save on valuable floor space. The built-in storage bench at the base adds extra room to display your growing plant collection, or you can leave it clear and save a spot to sit among the greenery.
