Dark and cosy dorm room ideas
To make a dorm feel less beige and more like home, top off the basics with pieces that show off you. Check out how we added some darkness, drama and order to this dorm room.
Set the tone with textiles. For a dark look, we chose grey, blue and black for soft stuff like quilt covers, a throw, a rug and block-out curtains. For the canopy, we dyed fabric dark blue and black and threw lighting chains on top (LED doesn’t get hot). Boxes under the bed and an open wardrobe nook maximise storage space.
Movable, multipurpose furniture is a big help. A floor lamp gives off the right reading light, and you can move it by your bed or armchair, too. A room divider with castors does roll-anywhere double duty for storage and decoration. Clip on photos or hang on stuff like baskets for toiletries (so you can get ready in your room).
Your dorm likely has some storage furniture, but you don’t have to see it! We attached roller blinds to this shelving unit. They create calm and hide your stuff. For storing clothes, papers and snacks, use different boxes and organisers. Group by shelf, activity and frequency of use, so you find what you need fast.

Like the room’s basics? We used IVAR shelving units, TARVA day-bed, INGO table, IVAR chair and NOLMYRA easy chair.
We love to see our customers get creative with our products. Go for it! But please note that altering or modifying IKEA products so they can no longer be re-sold or used for their original purpose, means the IKEA commercial guarantees and your right to return the products will be lost.
