A fresh start: pamper yourself with homemade body-care products

Begin the year with a new range of toiletries – all natural, all organic, and all handmade! Students Mia and Jakob share their one-step recipes for hair wash, deodorant and even a styling spray.

TWO-INGREDIENT HAIR WASH
15ml powdered rhassoul clay
30-45ml tepid water

Mix the clay and water and leave to stand for 10-15 minutes, or until the clay has absorbed the water. Remember to use glass or plastic containers and utensils, as metal ones can react with the minerals in the clay.

DO-IT-YOURSELF DEODORANT
500ml bicarbonate of soda
500ml potato flour or cornflour
500ml cold-pressed coconut oil
5-10 drops essential oil

Put all the ingredients in a bowl and mix to a smooth paste. If your coconut oil is in solid form, you can melt it using a water bath. Store your deodorant in a lidded jar.

SALTWATER HAIR-STYLING SPRAY
1 teaspoon mineral-rich sea salt
1/2 teaspoon glycerine
5-10 drops essential oil
80ml water

Pour all the ingredients into a beaker and stir, or put them into a glass jug with a lid and shake to mix. Store in a spray bottle for easy application.
